Do It Yourself: Eyeshadow Primer
Anyone with even a cursory interest in eye makeup knows that a good quality eye primer is absolutely integral for eye makeup to come together perfectly and last all day. After researching like a crazy person I zeroed in on 2 cult favourites- The elf Mineral Eyeshadow Primer and The Urban Decay Primer Potion. While the elf one is affordable, availability in India is a huge issue and while UDPP is easy enough to buy from Sephora, it costs a bomb! So what is a young adult on a shoestring college budget supposed to do? Why, DIY it of course! 😉
Please excuse my pictures, this is the first time I have ever made a DIY post and I have tried to keep the pictures as self-explanatory as possible. Hence all the teaspoons that shows all the exact proportions. 😛
What you will need:
- Liquid Foundation
- Beeswax based lip balm
- Corn flour/Corn starch
- Empty Container
Now before I go into the actual DIY let me explain why we are using each of the above mentioned ingredients and how they will help in improving your eye makeup.
Foundation: We must use foundation to neutralise the whitish cast of corn flour and to add a natural looking tint that will make your eyelids look a little brighter. I have used an inexpensive Street Wear one and really doesn’t matter which one you use.
Beeswax: Finding beeswax pellets in India is a huge chore so it’s much easier to use a beeswax based lip balm. This ingredient helps the eye shadow adhere to the eyelid better, and thus improves the pigmentation of the eye shadows. I have used a Khadi lip balm which has a pretty high proportion of beeswax along with my favourite emollient, Shea Butter.
Corn flour/Corn-starch: Both of these are more or less the same product, they are just derived from different parts of the corn plant. This ingredient will help in absorbing the oil on your eyelid and thus preventing creasing. I have no idea which company this one is from, I just filched it off mommy dearest! 😛
Empty Container: Self-explanatory or so one would hope! 😛
I use this primer as an everyday one so I don’t address any particular problem and just use the ingredients in a 1:1:1 proportion. But if you have oily lids and want to prevent creasing to a larger extent you can use a 1:1:2 (more con flour) ratio and to make your eye shadows look even more pigmented you can use a 1:2:1 (more beeswax) ratio; Note that when you increase the proportions of either beeswax or corn flour you may risk creasing or your eye shadows’ intense pigmentation respectively. So the safest ratio is definitely the first one but feel free to experiment to match your individual needs!
Step wise Instructions for DIY Eyelid Primer:
- Take the foundation, lip balm and corn flour in the proportion that deals with your issues and put them in the clean container. Here I have used a 1:1:1 proportion of half a teaspoon of lip balm, foundation and corn flour each.
- Use a toothpick or cocktail stirrer to mix all the ingredients together and ensure that all the individual ingredients are indistinguishable.
- Smooth a very tiny quantity of this primer on your eyelid prior to makeup application to ensure budge proof and pigmented eye makeup!

[alert-note]Looks quite easy Nivanya. Going by the swatches, this sure looks like a good one at that. I am super lethargic when it comes to any kind of DIY, but am really curious to see how good a primer I can make myself! Interesting post. 🙂 [/alert-note]
